Cremations with a Funeral Service

For cremations Phoenix, AZ, you can choose to have a memorial service – usually held at a later date after cremation – or you can choose to have a funeral service before cremation. Just because someone has chosen cremation as the means to dispose of their remains does not mean that a traditional funeral service can’t held before the cremation to honor the deceased.

If you choose to have a traditional funeral service before cremation, you can also have a viewing before the funeral service. You have a choice in how you acquire a casket. You can either purchase one (there are many types of caskets available online through big box retail and wholesale sellers) or you can rent one from the funeral home for the viewing and funeral service. If you decide to buy a casket, be sure that it is manufactured out of fully-combustible materials (no metal) so that it can be used for the cremation as well.

The viewing of the deceased usually occurs in a two-hour window before the funeral service. Friends, colleagues, and relatives can come during those two hours to pay their respects to the deceased and the offer support, encouragement, and comfort to the family. In some cases, mourners will choose not to stay for the funeral service after the viewing. Please don’t take that as a lack of respect, care, or concern. Some people are uncomfortable with death or they are still in the grieving process of the death of someone close to them, and they are just not emotionally able to handle more than a short visit.

The funeral service with cremations immediately follows the viewing. You will need to work with the funeral home director to customize the funeral service so that it is consistent with the deceased’s and your family’s wishes.

You will need to designate who will participate in the funeral service, what they will do, and in what order they will do it. The first person you need to designate is the coordinator of the service. This is often a clergy member, but it can also be someone else who was close to the deceased.

Most funeral services include some sort of readings. These can be poems, scriptures, and/or essays. You will designate who will read these passages and at what point they will be read during the service.

Eulogies are also often a part of funeral services. A eulogy is a thoughtful reminder of why the deceased’s life mattered, so you’ll want to make sure the person chosen – or who volunteers – for the eulogy will be true to the memory of your loved one. Then you will designate when the eulogy will be given during the funeral service.

Finally, music is usually included during funeral services. One or two songs is the standard. These songs can be prerecorded to be played by the funeral home, or they can be live renditions. The funeral home will make all the audio arrangements in any case, but you will need to designate at what part of the funeral service, the music will be played.

After the funeral service is over, the remains of the deceased will be cremated.
