Gifts that Memorialize a Loved One

After Goodyear, AZ cremations, friends and family want to remember the loved one who died and offer support and encouragement to the bereaved family. Sympathy cards and letters are the most traditional way to express condolences, share memories, and offer comfort. But memorial gifts, unlike cards and letters, are often a lasting tribute to the person who has died, and they can bring comfort continually to the family left behind.

Memorial gifts offer a tangible way to express love and sympathy. Because they are things, they can be enjoyed by the deceased’s family years after their loved one has died. And that can be a lasting source of comfort.

One type of memorial gift that you can give is a garden marker. Since being outside can often bring solace, gifting a garden marker can boost the soothing power of the outdoors. Garden markers can include garden benches, plaques, and stones that are engraved with the name of the deceased, inspirational quotes, and expressions of sympathy. Additionally, garden markers can be manufactured to have a photo of the deceased fired onto porcelain to make it a lasting tribute.

Another common memorial gift is to plant a tree in honor of the deceased person. Because trees are living, this will create a perpetual memorial for the loved one who has died. The most well-known memory trees organization is Seeds of Life. They will select the right tree for the recipient’s region to ensure that it will grow and mature. For cremations, memorial tree urns provide all that’s needed for a tree to grow, using part of the deceased cremains.

Memorial bricks are another way to honor the memory of someone who has died. Many nonprofit organizations and higher educational institutions allow donors and alumni to have memorial bricks installed on walls or in sidewalks.

Jewelry, created with small amounts of the deceased’s cremains, is a very popular memorial gift to honor a loved one who’s been cremated. The types of jewelry include rings, bracelets, necklaces, and even earrings. The sentiment behind jewelry with cremains is that you always have a part of your loved one with you, even though they are no longer alive. The jewelry is incredibly tasteful, and unless someone asks, no one will know that it contains cremains.

Another great memorial gift is to create a digital photo album of the deceased’s life. Find a photo scanning company, take all those old photos (and home movies too), package them up and send them, and you’ll get a DVD and/or thumb drive back with all the pictures and movies on it. Make copies and send them out. This is a great idea for families where every member wants all the original photos from parents and grandparents, because everybody gets a copy.

The greatest memorial gift, however, is yourself. Find ways to serve the grieving family. Ask them what you can do. If they tell you they don’t need anything, then cook a meal and drop it off. Then periodically check back in with them. The hardest part of losing someone comes after everyone else has moved on and moved back into their normal lives and routines. This can very lonely for the family, and staying in touch is a great way to show you care.
