Burying Cremated Remains

Cremations are among the cremation services offered in Phoenix, AZ. The majority of people think that the final disposition of cremation remains is scattering them in a special place. However, what can be done with cremated remains has significantly expanded beyond just scattering them.

While a portion of cremation remains may be scattered by the family of a loved one who has died and been cremated, there are many other final disposition options for the remainder of the cremation remains.

Some of the cremation remains, for example, can be incorporated into fireworks and presented as a brilliant and dazzling goodbye by a company that specializes in doing this. Some of the cremation remains can be mixed with an artistic medium to create a lasting memorial to a deceased loved one.

Some of the cremation remains can be used to give nourishment or support to a living memorial, such as new coral reefs – these are endangered, and without them, ocean life will die off – and new plantings of flowers, bushes, or trees.

However, most people don’t realize that some of the cremation remains may also be buried in a cemetery plot or urn garden. But, why would people want to bury some of the cremation remains of their loved one who has died? There are several reasons.

One of the most common reasons that some of a deceased person’s cremation remains are buried in a cemetery is because a loved one who has predeceased them is already buried there. This is very common with spouses who die many years apart.

If the first spouse died years ago, the odds are good that they were buried in a casket in a cemetery. Often when the first spouse dies, the family puts a double headstone in the cemetery with their name and date of birth and death and the surviving spouse’s name with their date of birth. Therefore, there’s a second cemetery plot designated for the surviving spouse when they die.

When the surviving spouse dies, their wishes for the final disposition of their cremation remains may include scattering some and burying the rest in the cemetery.

Just as with a casket, all cemeteries require that cremation urns or containers be buried in a vault. This ensures that the soil surround the urn doesn’t collapse over time as backhoes and other heavy equipment drive through the cemetery to dig graves and to maintain the cemetery.

Most cemeteries require that the cremation urn or container be biodegradable. The funeral director will ensure this is the case for urns that are buried in cemeteries.

Some cemeteries have created specially-designated areas, known as urn gardens, for the burial of urns. These beautifully-landscaped areas offer a permanent resting place for the deceased and a gorgeous environment for family and friends who come to visit.

Another way that cremation remains are buried is through storage in a columbarium. Columbariums are structures (standalone or inside a mausoleum) that contain niches where urns with cremation remains, as well as small personal effects of the deceased can be permanently stored. The niches may be open or glass-covered with a plaque beneath them with the deceased’s name, date of birth, and date of death, or they may be sealed close with a small gravestone with the same information.

  1. We have decided to cremate my diseased grandmother mostly because she contracted COVID. Thanks for mentioning here how cremated remains must be in a vault if you want to bury it at the cemetery. We’re looking into all these options and I wonder if memorial buildings also exist for these types of reasons. https://www.oldtennentcemetery.org/
